Why a Foundations of Creative Writing Course?

You may have clicked on this course because you know you’re a writer, or because you have a sneaking suspicion that you might be one. Whichever it is, this course will give you the tools to get the story out of your head and onto the page. More than that, it will help you to do so successfully, for an audience. Creative writing is a terrific way to express your vision, artistry and unique voice; it is also a therapeutic space for reflection.

Welcome to our course on the Foundations of Creative Writing! You’re probably wondering, “What’s the difference between creative writing and any other writing form?”. The difference is that you have the chance to express your voice, feelings and ideas in imaginative verse. You can’t do that in a business letter!

Our course is designed to arm you with writing skills like introductory principles to storytelling, creating characters and building a plot and story structure. By the end of this course, you will have created a 500-word flash fiction piece.

Subject Expert

David Cornwell was born in Grahamstown in 1985. He graduated with academic honours from Rhodes University in 2007, majoring in English and Philosophy. He received his Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Cape Town in 2011, where his dissertation was supervised by Damon Galgut and awarded a distinction. Cornwell is the author of Like it Matters, a novel published by Umuzi in April 2016. His writing has appeared in a wide range of publications, from The Mail and Guardian to Quiddity International Literary Journal. He also writes songs and plays guitar for Cape Town rock outfit KRAAL.
